About Niamh and Gary

Niamh and Gary are a husband-and-wife team known for their fun and insightful presentations, drawn from Niamh’s award-winning books and the couple’s six adventurous years living aboard a sailboat in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Niamh, known as “The Writer on the Water,” and author of Flares Up, and Following Sunshine is a former actress, TV director, and scuba instructor from Dublin, Ireland. Her storytelling is shaped by a life of volunteer travel, resilience, and reinvention. At 17, she moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne University. Her passion for global exploration, the marine environment, and working on remote islands fuels much of her work. In 2015, she volunteered to crew on Gary’s sailboat for a month, but they soon discovered they were meant for each other. They kept sailing — right into marriage.

Gary is a retired businessman from Los Angeles with a passion for pottery, sculpture, and many other creative pursuits. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and earned a Master’s in Spiritual Psychology later in life. He has traveled widely across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, often volunteering as a way to connect with new cultures and ideas. As a teenager, he earned his private pilot’s license; at 68, he learned to sail, bought a yacht, and moved aboard. In 2019, he became a certified scuba diver — a reminder that it is never too late to learn something new.

Together, Niamh and Gary share stories that reflect curiosity, adaptability, and the belief that we all have the power to change course and create the life we desire no matter our age.
