Beyond Ourselves

In March, 2012 a group of caring residents of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association decided to form an organization with their mission: to serve others in the community. They felt a need for a structured organization to continue their efforts.  This was the beginning of Beyond Ourselves, the community service organization of the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association.

Beyond Ourselves meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. at the PGICA.   New members are always welcome to join and help with our events and fundraisers. Celebrate Life is dedicated to the support of all women who have or have had cancer. Our members come from all over the area and all walks of life. Some ladies are recently diagnosed and others have been survivors for several years.

June was our last meeting of the "year." We don't have meetings in the summer but always find a good restaurant here in town to have lunch and catch up with each other. We’ll be meeting for lunch on the first Wednesday of July and August.  Why don’t you think about joining us? Just give me a call and I’ll be glad to let you know where we’re going to be. My first experience with ‘Celebrate Life’ was at lunch during the summer. I didn’t know a soul when I walked into the restaurant, but by the time I left, I knew I was in the right place and I would keep on coming back. It’s now been 11 years. Come on, give us a try.

Our next regular meeting will be September 6. I’ll be around during the summer and you can be sure that I’ll remind you before that date. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. at the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association, 2001 Shreve Street, Punta Gorda. For further information, please contact Sara Benson at 941-575-6765.

The Celebrate Life ladies wish you a safe and happy summer. We'll be back in touch in September

Fishing Club

Fishing Club

membership@pgifishingclub.org

This club has so much to offer – and we offer it to everyone.

The Fishing Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the PGICA auditorium.. At each meeting, we have a professional guide speak about our favorite topics: fish, bait, lures and locations. Each guide specializes in the different species so you can really learn a lot just by listening to them and asking questions. If you’re not sure about what, just check out website, www.pgifishingclub.org and click on the newsletter section and look for photos of our group. I’m in there with my great catches.

At each meeting, we have three magnificent door prizes. Just for being a member and attending a meeting, you could possibly win a Redbone rod or Okuma reel, a great tackle box, or one of the other many door prizes we select for that night.

The camaraderie in the group is phenomenal. We’re really like one big happy family.

We meet at 5:30 pm every Wednesday at the Tiki bar for happy hour. We also have the Friday morning breakfast club, which meets at 6:30 a.m. every Friday morning at Elena’s. The ladies meet twice a month, once for lunch and the other for ladies’ night out. We have our annual picnic, and of course the end of the year holiday party.

As I said, we have something for everyone. You don’t have to take my word for any of this. Come to our next meeting and see for yourself.

If you’d like more information you can always contact me at President@pgifishingclug.org or contact our Membership Director,at membership@pgifishingclub.org. That’s all you have to do. We’ll do the rest. Hope to see you at our next meeting in January.

JFF - Just for Fun

John Bothwell, President - drbothwell@gmail.com
Mike Manternach, Vice President - mmantern@gmail.com
Jerry Platt, Treasurer - puntaplatt@gmail.com
Marie Knabe, Secretary - rfknabe@yahoo.com

http://www.justforfun.peapps.com/

What is JFF besides a pink flamingo with sunglasses and flip-flops?  We’re a social group of energetic friends who enjoy having a good time and giving back to the community while we’re at it.  Some of us are still working and looking forward to retirement; some of us have already retired and are looking forward to no work.  But one thing we all have in common: we like to chill out, lighten up and have fun!

JFF - Just for Fun.

We also like to stay busy, so we pack the calendar with lots of fun and crazy events.  We have TGIFs, dinners, luncheons, socials, and anything else that strikes our fancy (Did you know there’s a National Margarita Day?  Well, we didn’t either, but the minute we found out, we threw together a margarita party. Now that’s carpe diem with a rim of salt!).  On a more sober, ahem… note, our awesome Reading Group and artistic and educational outings provide food for the mind, while our charitable events provide food for the soul.

Now that was quite a list, but we have one more thing to add.  Each month, we have a party—a big one that is often themed and always outrageous.  Examples you say?  How about a 1920s Speakeasy complete with secret door, passwords, the Charleston, and Tommy guns—fake, of course.  We don’t mix bathtub gin with heavy metal. We’ve celebrated Mardi Gras with king cakes, crawfish, and a parade; had a scavenger hunt dressed in black and white; and played the Newlywed Game while tasting wine.

JFF says, “That’s the Way I Like It” when they “Play that Funky Music” as we are “Staying Alive” in beautiful PGI.

Dan Kain, President

http://paradisefriends.peapps.com/

Paradise is a word that denotes peace, contentment, timeless harmony, and happiness. Paradise is where everyone is your friend. So why not be part of a social club that demonstrates these qualities?

Paradise Friends is a social club that is named for its joyous, fun loving adventures and outings that are created for members to look forward to each week. We get around. We go places like Miami, Sarasota, and Usseppa Island, to name a few. We go places, near, far, by boat, or by car. We dance, eat, and celebrate to bring in the New Year at our New Year’s Eve Party. We have fun parties outside the PGICA facility with food, music, and dance under the stars. We eat lunches and dinners in many different places, including Punta Gorda restaurants, and our homes. Oh the places that we go. What’s in it for you?

Paradise Friends gives you an opportunity to meet and maintain new and existing friends. We work together in harmony to enjoy each other. This social club takes us on a quest so we can have fun in our daily lives, enjoy tender and magical moments, laugh till we cry, and have a hay day when we get together. This is an adventure of a lifetime. If you are not a member, please join us. It’s simply divine. And it’s all GOOD!

Membership – Sue Preece is our Membership Chair. To join in the fun and participate in our social club the cost is only $20 per person. You can also order a name tag for $11. Tennis Anyone?Tennis Club

Bill Kaufman, President - kaufman1850@comcast.net

As a member of the PGICA you have no doubt seen our Tennis Courts on the Shreve Street side of the building. They are state of art “Composition Courts”… that is asphalt with approximately 3/8 overlay of reclaimed rubber, which is a lot easier on the joints and muscles for our members.

Our dues are $75 per family per calendar year, plus a onetime $100 initiation fee. The Tennis Club is totally self-sufficient; the courts are resurfaced and maintained with Tennis Club monies, which is the reason for the initiation fee.

New members are always welcome regardless of their level of play. For more information please visit our web-site at http://pgitennis.wikispaces.com/ or contact Don Holway at 941-347-4420, dbh1124@live.com.
