In order to participate in any class (unless otherwise stated) you must preregister and pay the fee at least three days before the date of the class. You may call and charge the fee by credit card or stop in the office and pay by cash, check or credit card. You will not be enrolled until the fee is paid. Most classes have a minimum enrollment requirement and the class will be canceled if that number is not met. All classes offered at the Punta Gorda Civic Association are open to the general public. Register at the PGICA office or call 941-637-1655. Please provide your telephone number and an e-mail address when you register so you can be notified in case of a class change or cancellation. 

BEYOND PGI: Icebergs, Puffins and Parades: Tuesday, May 2, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Jim and Marilyn Larkin will present a 45-minute video of their trip to Iceland last summer. The entertaining video will be followed by a discussion and travel tips. Registration not required.

SANDWICH SEMINAR: Tuesday, May 16, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Symposium: Let’s Talk About Stroke, Warning Signs and Life After. Sandwich Seminar is open to the public and sponsored by Bayfront Healthcare Punta Gorda which provides lunch at no cost to attendees. See the enclosed flyer for this month’s topic. You must preregister by calling PGICA at 941-637-1655.

ART, OIL PAINTING: Monday, May 8, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (second class May 15, if needed). Jan Britland teaches a fun and easy day long class using the “Bob Ross Technique”. Beginners are encouraged to attend. All students get to take their finished painting home with them the same day. The $50 fee includes a canvas and all materials needed to complete the painting. Class size is limited so call PGICA 941-637-1655 to register. Wear old clothes, bring your lunch, and enjoy a full day of painting. This fun class is offered monthly. Reminder - payment is required when registering.

BALLROOM DANCE CLASSES: Weekly, Thursdays, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Lynn Pitz, former New York Athletic Club ballroom dance instructor, teaches classes suitable for the beginner and intermediate dancer, in a variety of Latin International and American styles. Leather soled shoes should be worn for class. The cost of each class is $10 per person. Don’t sit on the sidelines at the next party or event, learn to dance! BASKETWEAVING CLASS (JUNE) – FOOTED PLANTER: Three Tuesdays, June 6 through 20, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. This is a great class for skill levels beginner to advanced beginners or for anyone that wants a basket that has a variety of uses. Beginners will learn the basics of a round spoked basket that teaches the fundamental skills for making a variety of round baskets. Advanced beginners will reinforce the skills they have learned in the beginner class as well as learning some new skills. No previous basketweaving experience is required. The $70 class fee includes all weaving materials necessary to complete the basket. Class size is limited to six students. (There is no basket weaving class in May.)

CRAFTING WITH MARY FRANCIS: Thursdays, May 11, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or May 25, 1 to 3 p.m. You will make two cards, a gift box and a treat bag. $20 includes all materials and instruction. Register by May 8 or May 22 by calling PGICA, 941-637-1655. Payment due at registration.

DAO YIN SHENG GONG: Wednesdays,10:00 to 11:00 a.m. This Stretch and Balance is the most popular and most helpful class for recovering one’s balance. It utilizes an ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system of gentle twisting motions, breath control, stimulation of acupressure points in the body and mental development. These fluid harmonious movements will improve energy circulation, loosen the joints, tone up and oxygenate muscles and relax the nervous system. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY ADVANCED:  9:00 a.m., second Wednesday every month. This group of dedicated digital photographers study both picture taking techniques and processing pictures with Adobe Photo Shop or similar software. The group occasionally takes photographic field trips. If you are interested in improving your skills, are familiar with Adobe Photo Shop or other similar programs, please come and join them. Free, no registration.

ESSENTRICS WORKOUT: Mondays, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Eccentrics is a dynamic workout designed to rebalance the entire body through simultaneous stretching and strengthening, resulting in greater joint mobility, improved posture, healthy joints and lean, long muscles. Essentrics is the technique used in the show “Classical Stretch” which has been on PBS since 1999. Instructor Elissa Rioux leads this fun class which will leave you toned, pain free, balanced and energized! Perfect warmup for tennis and golf. It is great for men and women of all ages and levels. All you need is a mat, $10 per class, no need to register.

FACEBOOK, INTERMEDIATE: Friday, May 5, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. This class will build on the Facebook 101 class and will be open to users who just want to learn more on how to best utilize Facebook for fun and entertainment. You will learn how to form groups on Facebook, how to tag friends, how to check-in favorite places, how to tag businesses, how to make a fan/business page, how to live stream and how to boost postings Make sure to bring your tablet, mobile device or laptop. iPAD SKILLS: Four Tuesdays, May 9 through May 30, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In this four week 2 hour a week class Pamela Cox will introduce the iPad and make you more comfortable using your tablet. Topics to be covered are protecting your ipad, common accessories, battery health, ports and buttons, exploring and organizing the home screen, joining a network, keyboards and typing, dictation and siri, settings and syncing, contacts and mail. Bring your charged ipad for hands on experience. Cost is $80

LANDSCAPE PAINTING IN OILS: Thursdays, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., ongoing throughout the year. Class is designed for all levels of painters. Class is small and each person receives instruction for their individual level. Cost is $125 for four 2-hour sessions in Room #5. She is an internationally recognized artist, travelling to where new scenery and environments inspire her. Payment is due upon registration.

LET’S GO FISHING! Mark your calendars! Captain Ralph Allen, long time fishing guide, will hold his popular fishing classes next season. You may choose from October 25 to November 29, January 10 to February 14, 2018 or February 21 to March 28. The classes are 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and the cost is $45 for each six-week series, payable at registration. More details in the September Commentator. ORIGAMI BOX MAKING: May 18, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Learn how to make lovely boxes from paper in the old Chinese tradition of simply folding paper into intricate shapes. Joanne Stratos will lead you through step-by-step so that you have a Spring-themed box to display. You will also have time to make a tag for a special gift. Instruction and all materials provided. Cost is $15. Payment is due at registration. Call PGICA, 941- 637-1655 at least two days ahead to register.

TAI CHI FOR BEGINNERS: Mondays, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. No experience necessary, wear comfortable clothes and flat soled shoes. The object of this class, taught by Mary Cel Curtis, is to introduce you to the benefits and wonders of Tai Chi. The benefits are many: better balance; stress management; building stronger joints and muscles; exercising the brain; improving your health; increasing self-esteem; and, most important of all, having fun. The wonders of Tai Chi are how it makes you feel physically and mentally.

The form that we will be studying is 'Yang 13'. There are 13 different tai chi moves in a flowing sequence. Each move has its own purpose, meditative as well as martial. Come join us for some easy exercising and fun. $10 per class, registration not required.

TAI CHI/QIGONG: Fridays, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., beginning April 14, Richard will conduct a series of "experiential" tai chi and qigong classes. These classes are designed to give students at any level of expertise the ability to understand the difference between the 2 systems, tai chi and qigong, and which they should attend. Every 2 weeks the system will change. This series is to provide the knowledge of what potential students may want to do to help themselves through tai chi or qigong, major components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Each class is $9 and students drop in, drop out as they want. Registration not required.

TWITTER, INTERMEDIATE: Friday, May 19, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. This class will build on the Twitter 101 class and will be open to users who just want to learn more on how to best utilize Twitter for news and getting your voice heard. You will learn how to build followers, live stream on Twitter, discuss Moments, using gifs and much more. Cost of this class is $20 per person. Call PGICA, 941-637-1655 to register. YOGA: Every Thursday 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The yoga workout is designed to accommodate a beginner as well as an intermediate student. If you have difficulty getting down and up on the mat, the class can accommodate you while sitting in a chair. Sessions are $10, registration not required. You will need a mat and comfortable clothes. Please do not have a heavy breakfast. ZUMBA FIESTA: Every Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Cost is $10 a session, registration not required. Experience an absolute blast in one exhilarating hour of caloric-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life. Zumba routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.
